Aegina Island
The island of Aegina is one of the most popular tourist destinations as it is the closest island to Athens.Even though the island is small, it boasts a great number of sights and natural beauties.
Aegina Town
The island’s capital, is the picturesque Aegina Town, where the main island port lies. In this colorful little town, you’ll find a great selection of cafes, restaurants, traditional taverns, and shops, especially along its bustling waterfront.
Athena Aphaia Temple
Is the island’s highlight is the famous Aphea Temple. It forms in fact an equilateral triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, the so-called “holy triangle” of the antiquity.
The Temple of Aphaia has been dedicated to the goddess Athena and is located atop a hill full of pine trees.. This is one of the greatest architectural wonders of ancient Greece. It was built in 480 BC and 25 of the original 32 Doric columns still stand due to the skill of the restorers. It is situated in a Sanctuary about 13 km east of the main port.
Monastery of Agios (Saint) Nektarios
The Monastery of Agios (Saint) Nektarios is the most important religious monument of Aegina, located 6 km from the center of Aegina Town. The monastery was founded by the Bishop of Pentapolis Nektarios around the period of 1904-1910, after the request of several nuns. Bishop Nektarios settled down in Aegina in 1908, yet the monastery operated again in 1904 under his guidance while he remained in Rizarios School. He lived in the monastery for 13 years and he was buried under a plane tree outside the church of the monastery.
Around 7 kilometers from Aegina Town, facing the hill of Agios Nektarios Monastery, there lies a hidden gem –PALEOCHORA MEDIEVAL TOWN which served as the capital of the island for nearly a millennium. This town is abandoned for the last 200 years, the site of Paleochora is a must not only for its historical significance but also for its architectural and natural beauty.
House of Nikos Kazantzakis
In the wonderful area of Livadi, 2 km north of the city of Aegina, visitors can admire the house of Nikos Kazantzakis, one of the most renowned Greek writers and philosophers. Kazantzakis stayed in Aegina for major periods of his life, especially during the German occupation.
Tower of Markellos
The Tower of Markellos constitutes a landmark of Aegina and is an edifice of major historical significance. Located near the center of the main town, this impressive pink structure catches the eye of the visitor with its Venetian architectural style and imposing facade. The Tower was erected in the late 17th century by Venetians, as part of the greater fortifications that guarded the port, and functioned as a watchtower.

Soak up the sun on the island’s beaches:
Perdika, a quiet pebbly beach in the traditional village of Perdika,
Souvala, distinctive for its warm, therapeutic waters suitable for curing rheumatisms,
Agia Marina, a cosmopolitan organized tourist destination with numerous hotels, rooms to let, beach bars and restaurants.
Vagia, a beautiful sandy beach offering amenities, but if you are willing to walk a little further, you can enjoy beautiful isolated coves.
